Bishop J.L. Hodge

Bishop J.L. Hodge was born on June 4, 1973, in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in the historic Stop Six community. His spiritual foundation was established at an early age while attending Bethany Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of his grandfather, Pastor B.R. Hodge Sr., where he accepted Christ.

During his teenage years, Bishop Hodge drifted away from the church and became entangled in a life marked by drugs, unhealthy relationships, and gang involvement. As a former member of one of the largest gangs in the Fort Worth area, he experienced firsthand the struggles and dangers of that lifestyle. However, in the late 1990s, his life took a transformative turn when he recommitted himself to Christ. Answering the call of God, he was commissioned to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in October 1996.

On April 18, 1998, Bishop Hodge married the love of his life, Lady Abesa Hodge. Together, they have built a strong and loving family, blessed with four children and four grandchildren.

Later in 1998, as his grandfather’s health began to decline, Bishop Hodge stepped forward to help carry the weight of the ministry that had been faithfully built over the years. In January 1999, he was officially called to serve as Pastor of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, succeeding his grandfather and continuing the legacy of leadership and service.

Committed to spiritual growth and sound doctrine, Bishop Hodge furthered his studies at Southern Bible Institute in Dallas, Texas. There, he deepened his understanding of biblical principles, equipping himself to effectively shepherd and care for the congregation entrusted to him.

On August 5, 2007, under divine direction, Bishop Hodge led Bethany Church into a merger with Pastor Nolan Yancey and Southside Christian Center, where he served as Pastor and Overseer. This transition marked a significant season of expansion and unity in ministry. On Sunday, October 25, 2008, Bishop Hodge was consecrated to the office of Bishop in a powerful and affirming service, confirming God’s hand upon his life.

Following a two-year merger process, in 2009 the ministry successfully completed the purchase of the Southside Christian Center facility. The church was officially renamed The Bethany Church, continuing its mission with renewed vision and stability.

Now celebrating over two decades of faithful leadership—27 years in pastoral ministry—Bishop J.L. Hodge remains a dedicated servant of God. His life stands as a testimony of redemption, purpose, and unwavering commitment to preaching the Gospel and building the Kingdom of God.
